This week B and I will be celebrating Christmas with my parents. The kidlets are off with their father this year and so its going to be a cozy group of four for Christmas dinner. My parents live about three hours away and so they will be staying over two nights (Christmas Eve eve and Christmas night). Sometimes they choose to stay in a hotel but this time they are staying with us.
Luckily my parents like B. A lot. A lot a lot. That's partly because B is just really awesome and partly because my parents (aka my Dad) feel that as long as I have a man around to head up the household, all is right with the universe. But more on my relationship with my family later.
B and I have had a number of people staying with us ranging from long term but vanilla friends to family on both sides of the relationship. Nobody has really noticed that we are an M/s couple and there are a few reasons for this.
The first is that people see what they want to see and because we are not running around advertising our dynamic and because B isn't physically disciplining me in front of people, they see what they want, which is a nice, "normal", traditional couple who choose to live their lives in a slightly old-fashioned way.
The second is that we are pretty low-key. I'm allowed to call him by his given name and a lot of the things that people imagine would be part of an M/s relationship just aren't really done all that often. We tend to have a few protocols and routines. I make sure B has his choice of food or beverages, I offer to run and fetch for him, I make him coffee in the morning if I'm not working.
Having people (aka my parents) under our roof for two days is going to be stressful for me but for a whole bunch of reasons that have nothing to do with BDSM.
